Gemma White BSc (Hons.) CCC-SLP is a New York and New Jersey State and UK licensed Speech Language Pathologist with affiliation to the American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA) where she serves on the AAC Special Interest Group 12: Professional Development Committee, Royal College of Speech Language Therapists (RCSLT) in the UK and the National Association of Neonatal Therapists (NANT).
Gemma White began working with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, in an integrated youth program following the TEACCH model in the 1990's. She trained as a speech language pathologist at University College London with her dissertation focusing on visual processing skills of children with autism and dyslexia.
Since moving to America in 2002 Gemma worked at The McCarton Center for Developmental Pediatrics. Currently, in addition to running her own practice, Gemma serves as the Clinical Coordinator for the Assistive Technology Program at Westchester Institute for Human Development. Gemma is passionate about educating Speech Language Therapists and industry professionals in Evidence Based Practice in the treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorders and AAC, she speaks on the topic nationally and internationally.
Gemma currently serves as the Clinical Coordinator of the Assited Technology Program
at the Westchester Institute for Human Develpment, a New York based non-profit as well as the Westchester TRAID site where individuals with disabilities are able to borrow AT equipment at no cost. In 2022 Gemma earned her department internationally recognized Maker's award for customized AT Equipment utilizing Prusa 3d printers.
Comprehensive Evaluations focus on the whole child examining medical and developmental histories. We evaluate speech, language, social communication, voice and feeding. By focusing on the whole child we get the best results in speech language therapy.
Speech Language Therapy plans will be developed according to individual needs setting out achievable short and long term goals for feeding and communication. We offer educational consultancy, short and long term therapy solutions.
Providing Speech Language Therapy for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Therapy focuses on Evidence Based Practices to optimally support individuals across the Autism Spectrum in all areas of life focusing on collaboration with parents, school and home teams. Visual supports, video modeling and social communication make therapy fun and functional.
Providing evaluations and treatment of Dysphagia/Feeding difficulties for pre-term infants to young adults with developmental disabilities. Feeding therapy aims to maximize each individuals for oral feeding and address the underlying sensory and oral motor skills necessary for safe and pleasurable feeding. Understating that each baby is different we introduce cue based feeding working carefully with caregivers.
We are all multimodal communicators, when verbal communication is not possible or the primary means of communication, speech language therapy will include a comprehensive analysis for augmenting current speech and providing alternative means of communication, Gemma assesses low and high tech options. Gemma is serving a a member of the Special Interest Groups for AAC to enhance this growing area of our field. The use of AAC when working with children with Autism is evidence based and forward thinking, Gemma has been a leader in this area.
Oral Placement Therapy uses auditory, tactile and visual input to assist children in producing target sounds. Using evidence based techniques for speech language therapy we will ensure your child maximizes their goals for oral speech. Gemma is skilled in working with clients with a variety of diagnosis including Childhood Apraxia of Speech, Developmental Delay, Rare Genetic Syndromes, lisp, stuttering and voice disorders. Gemma is trained in PROMPT, and Oral placement therapy Personalized programs to provide the best Oral-Placement Therapy (OPT) techniques add a tactile component to both feeding and speech therapy, enabling clients to “feel” the movements esential to develop speech clarity.
